itamin B-3 is not only
essential to a healthy diet, recent studies indicate it may aid in the treatment of
diseases such as high cholesterol, diabetes, schizophrenia and granuloma annulare. Niacin
in large oral doses lowers serum cholesterol concentrations in humans. Doctors now
prescribe a time-release formula of niacin to treat the disease. Studies on niacinamide,
another form of vitamin B-3, indicates that it suppresses the development of non-obese
diabetes, or diabetes type 1. Other findings suggest that it may also play a role in
autoimmune diseases associated with damaged tissue such as rheumatoid arthritis, chronic
colitis, glomerulonephritis, and autoimmune thyroiditis. Vitamin B-3 is undergoing studies
to see if it may help treat schizophrenics. Studies found that a large number of people
suffering from schizophrenia were vitamin B-3 deficient.
