iacinamide, or vitamin B-3,
is one of the most important vitamins in animal feed formulations. Niacinamide, the
essential building block for the coenzymes NAD, is an essential element in animal feed
because it protects the mucous membrane, it keeps the skin and central nervous system
healthy and it helps maintain healthy bones. Worldwide, the animal feed industry has
increased its demand of vitamin B-3 because it has been well recognized that vitamin B-3
must be supplemented in feed to ensure the animals' nutritional needs are met. Animals
deficient in vitamin B-3 show signs of pellagra, a disease that causes dermatitis, poor
feathering and perosis in poultry; inflammation of the intestines, which causes diarrhea
in swine; and nervous disorders in fish.
